Episode 2 Spoilers
Mikuru is not at all like the voice of reason I expected. She’s such an adorable dork. Her earnest hurt when she said “you really aren’t a detective Precure” made her sound like a kicked puppy… She’s still serious, but in a childish genuine and naive way, so I understand why Anna worried about her even in her sleep. Especially when she can’t stop making that face around Anna. The way Anna’s sleep talk transitioned from “Mikuru” to “mom” was really funny.
The mystery with Mikuru and Anna’s family (families?) grows. My guess was that Mikuru’s admired detective and the woman holding child Mikuru’s hand in the opening was her mother (and Anna’s grandmother), but the comment that Mikuru got the pendant from her grandmother and the reveal that Precure and fairies are still a secret after all is interesting. Mikuru lives in a dorm and not with her mom, so maybe she really is a grandma’s girl? I’m not really a theory person though, so unless I’m bored enough, I’ll probably wait and see where it goes.
I was a little worried since I’m usually not a fan of this type of character, but I like the direction they went with for Jett-senpai. I like that they played the 222 yeas old thing straight. It doesn’t make him feel arrogant, just experienced, and it brings out cute, innocent moments in the duo. His professionalism and insistence on being called Jett-senpai over Jett-san is also cool.
I already liked Nijī from the first episode, but I like him even more here. I wasn’t expecting him to be so cute, proudly and earnestly showing off his monster. I think Jett-senpai and Nijī could have an interesting dynamic, so I hope they interact more. But that seems unlikely if he’s a support, so I’ll root for him to become a yellow cure.
The lore drops… Not many Star Detective Precure in history, but apparently enough that London and Japan both have an agency. And there was a Precure there that vanished a few months before the duo arrived. The gal villain and Luluka appeared in the next episode preview, so maybe we’ll learn even more about the Phantom Thieves Guild very soon.
